Pre-flight checks.

Pre-flight checks, are they worth it?

If you have seen any of my other pages, I mention that one of reasons for using a drone on site is the safety aspect in reducing the number of possible means of an accident on site.

The truth is that a drone is only as safe as the operator using it and the safety of the drone comes down to thorough flight safety regime.

That regime can cover regular checks at predetermined times (Flight hours or Days) as well as pre and post flight checks. These are perhaps the most important part of any flight safety plan.

Regular checks are a quality assurance method to determine if the aircraft or drone is safe for flight. It can include, but is not limited to, a physical check of the aircraft frame, props and payload for physical damage, ensuring that detachable parts (legs etc) are correctly secured. Checking the wind and weather conditions on the day of flight and recording your findings.

The type, quantity and quality of the checks you do should be adaptable to the type of drone and model used. They should follow, but not be limited to the recommendations of the manufacturer and MUST be completed in accordance with your OA and recorded for future reference.

From the time you set up the drone for flight until the time you power off and pack away your check and monitoring never stop and remember, there is no replacement for the damage an in-flight incident can do to your reputation, your self esteem and your equipment, so ask your self ‘Is it worth the risk?
